Born 21st September 1934, at Rwene in Buhara Sub- County, then Kabale District to Mr. Blazio Tirikwendera, son of Yohana Maria Batista Mpazi and Marita Keiganzi. A 2nd born of 7 siblings – Maria, Roza, Purkeria, Regina, Rwomushana, Paulino, Linus. He was the last surviving. He was baptized a month later 21st October 1934 at Rushoroza, Kabale. His first day at school was at Buhara Catholic Primary School.
He was to later settle down in P4-P6 at Rushoroza Primary School while staying at uncle’s home (Uncle Cornelio). He went on to Rushoroza Junior Secondary – a boarding school for J1 – J3 in 1953. He performed very well and got a full scholarship from the District Education Office to St. Leo’s College, Kyegobe – Fort portal for S1 – S3. He went on to Kyambogo College to do a Teachers’ Certificate that took 2 years, graduating in 1958. Throughout his education, our Dad did not recall a time when he was not either a prefect, if not a head prefect.
After obtaining his Teachers Certificate, he was immediately posted as a teacher at his former school – Rushoroza. He taught for a bit and before one year elapsed, he was appointed Headmaster at 25. This he did until 1964 when he got a full scholarship to St Mary’s College Strawberry Hill, in England. He did full training as a teacher that lasted 3 years, graduating with a Diploma. Thereafter, he got another scholarship to study audio-visual aids. That would be teaching with PowerPoint presentations.
He returned to Uganda in 1969 and was reinstated to his former job at Rushoroza. After a short while he was posted to St Augustine’s TTC Butiti as Principal for 8 years. Here, he got married to our mother, Lillian Mary Ndazarwe in 1972. At Butiiti he got his first three children, Annette, David and Denitz.
After Butiti, he was transferred to St. John Bosco’s TTC, Mbale. He worked at Nyondo TTC in Mbale during very turbulent times until 1981 when he was transferred to St George’s TTC, Ibanda where he worked until his retirement age that was then 55 years in 1989. In Mbale we got some additions to the family, that is Julius and Isaiah. Rose and Christine joined us in Ibanda. Daddy was a very jolly man, always full of interesting stories, extremely smar and organized and had a very tenacious spirit, a case in point being his pension case which he pursued unwaveringly until the time of his death. We thank God for allowing us to share life with Dad for all these years.
There will be a requiem mass at St. Mbaaga Catholic Church Kiwatule on Friday 02nd September 2022 at 10:00am followed by vigil in Ibanda.
Burial will take place at their ancestral home in Ibanda on Saturday 03rd September 2022 starting at 12:00noon.
