George Okurapa, born in Kumi, Uganda on January 1, 1960 to Papa Serwano Onyoin and Toto Esther Apio (Sr). George who passed away in Canada on January 11, 2025, was a distinguished figure known for his contributions to both the public and private sectors in Uganda and Canada.
Early Life and Education:
Okurapa’s educational journey began at Kawo Primary School, culminating in his passing Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) in 1976. He then attended Jinja Secondary School (1977-1979), but his studies were disrupted by the 1979 war. He continued his Ordinary Level education, after the war, at Moroto High School in mid-1979 to 1980, before completing his Advanced Level education at Ngora High School (1981-1983), where he served as Head Prefect. He went on to Makerere University, where he served as Guild President and graduated in 1986 with a degree in Sociology and Political Science.
Career and Leadership:
George Okurapa demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout his student years and professional career. He held various positions in the public and private sectors in both Uganda and Canada. In Canada, he worked with the City of Toronto as the Community and Labour Market Manager, playing a vital role in connecting employers with suitable employees. He also lectured on Canadian Social Policy at Seneca College.
Legacy:
Okurapa left a lasting legacy. Known as “George the Heretic” for his unconventional thinking, he was a respected mentor and academic, influencing many through his guidance and knowledge. His significant contributions to City Social and Economic Development made a positive impact on the communities he served.
Personal Life:
George Okurapa enjoyed a 40-year marriage with Edidah Okurapa. They had four children: Peter Okalebo, Esther Apio Jr, Faith Apolot, and Jeldin Asio Jr. He is survived by his wife, his children, and his only surviving sibling, Jennifer Apolot. He will be greatly missed by his nieces, nephews, in-laws, extended family, friends and his clan Ikaribwok Asenyak, who were looking forward to his return home to develop Kamenya and Kachumbala.
George Okurapa’s life was characterized by dedication, leadership, oratory prowess and service. His contributions will be remembered for generations to come.
There will be a Funeral Service at All Saints Church, Nakasero on Thursday, 20th February 2025 at 9:00am.
There will be another Funeral Service at St. Andrew’s Church of Uganda in Kachumbala on Friday, 21st February 2025 at 9:00am.
Burial will take place at their ancestral home in Kokwakipi Village, Komuge Parish-Kachumbala Sub-County, Bukedea District on Saturday, 22nd February 2025 at 4:00pm.
