Naava Betty Namulondo as she was commonly known, was born to the Late James Lutaaya Kaganda and Nnaalinya Alice Evarini Nassolo Zalwango.

She lived with the Katimbo family in Lukuli in her early years with her brothers; Kasaato (RIP) and Kisaliita. They had an elder sister Naava Nankinga Mukasa (RIP). However, she’s survived by several siblings of the Kaganda family.

Betty’s mother, Nnaalinya Zalwango died suddenly when Betty was five years old. She suffered a fatal heart attack in 1953 on getting the news of her Brother’s deportation (Ssekabaka Muteesa II).

Naava Namulondo was at Gayaza Junior School up to J.1 and J.2, she later joined Mt. St. Mary’s Namagunga 1963-1966 for S.1-S.4 after which she joined Tororo Girls School for her A’Levels. She lived with her Auntie Nnaalinya Mpologoma during these later years

She moved to Cambridge, England in 1969 to study and seek employment and met her husband, Peter, shortly after her arrival. They did an extraordinary amount of travelling around the UK and abroad whilst Peter completed his medical training. This included time in London, Bristol, Poole, Birmingham in the UK, and Islands in Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. During this period, they brought their four children into the world: Suna, Talika, Jemba and Emma. Betty and Peter settled into family life in Tiverton, Devon, where Peter was a doctor in a nearby General Practice.

She was an exemplary matriarch: the children’s needs were paramount and she championed their education. She home-schooled Suna and Talika early in their lives and carried this passion on in later life, completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) to become a secondary school teacher.

She was passionate about teaching and learning, completing a BSc in Psychology and furthering her education in the topic wherever she could. She was an academic.

She moved to Bristol in 2002 and spent her free time enjoying Bristol culture and music. She was an avid member of a local choir, volunteered at a local Medieval Barn venue (only 200 in the UK), and watched plenty of sports, especially rugby, being inspired by her sons’ impressive careers in the sport. She loved swimming, baking and most of all hosting her children’s families.

She was an excellent cook and prolific baker. Her grandchildren became the light of her life.
