Birth and Early Life
Michael Alvin Komagum was born on 21st April 2009 at Entebbe Hospital to Mr. Alex Atim and Ms. Florence Ojera. He was raised with strong values, discipline, and deep love for family. Michael was a gentle, respectful, and joyful child whose presence brought warmth and peace to all who knew him. He peacefully passed away on 29th January 2026 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. In his final moments, Michael left his father with words that will remain forever in the hearts of the family: “Dad, I have found the answer.” The answer is Heaven.
Education and Passion
Michael was a proud resident of Entebbe Municipality. He attended Entebbe Junior Primary School for his primary education, and at the time of his passing, he was a Senior Three student at Hana International School. He was committed to his studies and well known for his bright, outgoing personality. Michael was disciplined, respectful, and caring, always ensuring that those around him felt included, supported, and loved.
Passions, Talents, and Interests
Michael was a young man of many gifts. While he was widely recognized for his exceptional talent in swimming, he was much more than an athlete. He also had a strong love for music, and he carried a creative spirit that brought joy into every space he entered.
Michael was also remarkably business-minded for his age. He often shared business ideas and advice with his brothers and cousins, guiding and encouraging them with a maturity beyond his years. Many family members remember him not only as a young boy, but as someone who carried wisdom, ambition, and vision for the future.
Michael’s last notable swimming appearance was in August 2024, where he participated in a highly impressive competition, reflecting his confidence, determination, and love for the sport. He also enjoyed exploring, meeting people, and living life fully.
The Beginning of the Illness
Michael’s health challenges began on 14th June 2024, when he started experiencing knee pain. The pain came on and off, and from that time, his mother Florence Ojera tirelessly pursued medical attention for him. She endured countless sleepless nights, moved from one doctor to another, and did everything within her means to find answers.
Throughout this period, Michael attended several medical consultations and was repeatedly assured that he would be fine. In January 2025, an X-ray showed a knee fracture, and once again the family was told that he would recover. However, Michael’s condition continued to worsen despite the reassurance.
During this difficult time, Florence showed extraordinary strength and love, using every available resource to keep Michael stable. She ensured strict care at home, monitored his health closely, sought treatment, and did everything possible — including medication, diet, and continuous support — to keep him strong until further help could be found.
Diagnosis and the Brave Fight
After further investigations, Michael was finally diagnosed in March 2025 with Osteosarcoma (bone cancer), an aggressive form of cancer. Upon receiving the diagnosis, his father Alex Atim immediately took action and traveled with Michael to the United States for specialized medical management.
Michael began chemotherapy treatment in May 2025. During his time in the United States, he was surrounded by devoted care from his father Alex and his aunties Evelyne, Aggie, and Janet, who stood by him throughout his treatment journey. His mother Florence remained in close contact with Michael, the family in the USA, and the doctors, continually offering support, encouragement, and guidance throughout the entire process. Family in Uganda also upheld him continuously through prayer, encouragement, and faith.
Despite the aggressive nature of the cancer, Michael displayed remarkable courage and resilience. Doctors in the United States often referred to him as a “miracle child,” because he continued to live beyond many medical expectations and timelines that had been given. His life became a testimony of strength, endurance, and God’s grace.
Passing and Legacy
Michael peacefully passed away on 29th January 2026 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, leaving behind a legacy of courage, dignity, and quiet strength.
Michael will be remembered for his loving heart, his bright smile, his respect for others, and the joy he brought to everyone around him. Though his life was short, his impact was deep, and his memory will remain forever in the hearts of all who loved him.
