Lydia Bukirwa Kayanja Hatega was born on the 10th July 1945 in Jinja to the Late Mr. Samson Bantubano Kayanja and Late Eleanor Nalunkuma. She was the 5th of 8 children. She attended Gayaza School for both her primary and secondary education where she also served as a Head Girl.
She later attended Makerere University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons). Maama Lydia was an active member of Mary Stuart Hall and developed a passion for drama and the Arts – participating in many plays.
Maama Lydia was one of the first female graduates in Uganda to join the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where she met her late husband Ambassador Francis Xavier Hatega. They both commenced a successful career as diplomats representing our nation across the US, Europe and in particular East Africa. Following the death of her husband she later retired from MoFA at the rank of Ambassador and joined Uganda Revenue Authority where she led the administration functions till her retirement in the early 2000’s
She is survived by three (3) biological children Vickie, Frank and Olivia, and also Gloria, Carol, Don and Paula Sibo, Eleanor Nakunja and Richard Mugabe. Grandchildren Luke, Jasmine, Tendo, Francis, Brandon, Ezra, Shannell, Laurina, Peace, Ssubi, Davis, Brianna, and Tatianna. Sons- in- Law Moses Kiwanuka, Paul Kabanda and Davis Muhwezi.
Vigil will be today on Tuesday 7th June at Lakeside Drive, Luzira, Kampala.
There will be a church service at St Stephens Church, Luzira on Wednesday 8th June starting at 9am.
Burial will take place on Thursday 9th June at Giseke, Nyakabande, Kisoro starting from 12 midday.
