Work Experience:
- 2004 – 2005: He was a parliamentary reporter representing Ultimate Media Consult.
- 2005 – 2006: He was a research executive with Ultimate Media Consult, helping in the gathering of research on media practice in Uganda.
- 2007 – 2022: He joined the Daily Monitor newsroom and quickly distinguished himself as a security reporter who broke multiple stories for the front page. As a senior reporter on security, he notably covered Ugandan troops deployed to Somalia under the African Union peacekeeping force known as AMISOM, embedded with Ugandan troops hunting down LRA rebels in Central African Republic, and covered violence and political instability in South Sudan.
- 2022 to 2024: He was a founder of the Kampala-based East African Centre for Investigative Reporting, an organization that, in recognition of its immense potential, had only recently won a generous grant to focus more substantially on improving the quality of investigative journalism in Uganda. He was looking forward to this and other work opportunities in 2025.
- 2018 to 2024: He was a news stringer for The Associated Press news agency, covering breaking news in Uganda. His last report, still unpublished, was about road carnage in Africa. He had even interviewed Joseph “Joe Walker” Beyanga, the well-known road safety campaigner, for his report.
What His Colleagues Say:
Risdel was a humble man before he was a humble journalist. His journalism was pure, never driven by malice or ill-motive. He was known to forgive those who hurt him, casually laughing it off and never holding a grudge when he should have held one. Although he had friends in government and others in important offices, he never took advantage of anything – or of anyone – and many times he faced hardship without ever compromising his dignity. The immense outpouring of grief at his demise, even from officials he may not always have covered in a positive light, is a testament to his good heart, his unfailing friendliness, and his professionalism as a journalist. The journalism community has lost a dear friend and reliable colleague.
