A Distinguished Mentor, Corporate Leader and Media Practitioner

Hon. Onapito Francis Ekomoloit, born on April 26, 1966 to Papa Onapito John Stephen and Toto Abuin Faith Nora Onapito in Asalatap, Wera, Amuria District, Eastern Uganda, was a prominent figure in Ugandan politics and media. His journey from a humble beginning to becoming a respected leader was marked by academic excellence, political acumen, and a deep commitment to public service.

Education and Early Career

Ekomoloit’s educational journey began at Angole Wera Primary School and continued at Kidongole Primary School. He later attended St. Edward’s Secondary School, Bukuumi, Gulu Secondary School, and St. Peter’s College Tororo. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from Makerere University and a Master of Arts in Communication, Journalism, and Public Affairs from American University, Washington, D.C.

His early career was spent in journalism, where he worked as a reporter and sub-editor for The Monitor Newspaper and Editor- in-chief for the Crusader Newspaper, a respected political pundit and public speaking guru. He also served as a lecturer in Mass Communication at Makerere University.

Political Career

Hon Onapito Ekomoloit’s political career comenced in 1998 when he was elected Member of Parliament for Amuria County. During his tenure, he introduced a significant Constitutional Amendment Bill in 1999, aiming to separate the roles of ministers and MPs. Although the bill was not passed, it sparked important discussions on governance reform.

Public/ Private sector Service

Onapito Ekomoloit has held various high-profile positions in the Ugandan government. He served as Deputy Press Secretary and Presidential Press Secretary under HE President Yoweri Museveni. His experience in Public rRelations and Media Management was further honed during his tenure as Directorof legal and Corporate affairs, Chairman board of directors at Nile Breweries Limited, Soroti Fruit Limited, MTN Foundation, and many others.

A Passion for Public Service

Beyond his professional and political roles, Onapito Ekomoloit was known for his cultural and philanthropic endeavors. He was a highly accomplished role model, an ardent environmental activist and has been involved in various initiatives to promote sustainable development, community engagement, environmental conservation. His commitment to public service and his dedication to making a positive impact on society earned him the respect and admiration of many.

A Luminary Extinguished:

Hon. Onapito Francis Ekomoloit died on 27th September 2024, he is survived by his loving wife for 20 years and his three children Ian, Imalaika and Epogare.

There will be a Funeral Service at St. Luke Church of Uganda- Ntinda on Tuesday 26th November 2024 starting at 9:00am, followed by vigil at his home in Kisaasi-Kampala.

Burial will take place at their ancestral home in Asalatap-Wera Sub- County, Amuria District on Saturday, 30th November 2024 starting at 9:00am.
