Dr. Jackson Odimbe Were was born on 27th December 1940 to the late Dr. Daudi Walufu Odimbe, of the Balyali Clan, and the Late Abigail Nabawanuka Odimbe. He went to Lumino CMS (Bukwekwe) Primary School for his elementary education from 1950 to 1955. He attended Budaka Junior– the intermediate level between the present primary and secondary education– between 1956 and 1959. He obtained his Cambridge School Certificate –the current Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) at Nabumali High School – in 1961 and the Cambridge Advanced School Certificate (Mbale SS) in 1963. He joined the University of East Africa (now Makerere University) in 1965 to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery which he completed in 1970. Dr. Were was the first Musamia graduate of Human Medicine from the present day districts of Busia and Namayingo. He enrolled for a Master of Medicine at Makerere University in 1973 and was awarded the Degree of Master of Medicine in 1976.
He married Grace Lwande on 10th May 1975 with whom they had seven children.

There will be a funeral service at St. Peter’s Church of Uganda Lumino on Friday, 20th May 2022 starting at 10:00am.
Burial will take place at their ancestral home in Bumala Ward, Lumino Town Council, Busia District on Saturday, 21st May 2022 starting with a service at 10:00am.
