On life’s long journey, you meet some extraordinary people. As a boy, living in Kampala, Uganda, I lived right next door to this man and his family. A true gentleman. And an exceedingly brave one too. Serving in the Uganda government as an ambassador in the period of Idi Amin (1971-1979) cannot have been easy.

I was best friends with his three sons Robert, (the late) Michael and Martin Kasirye (now a UN diplomat himself), and I just about remember baby Ivy (who is now one of Uganda’s top doctors), sharing the very happiest times of my youth.

My sincere condolences to his lovely wife Jane and the whole Kasirye family. RIP Francis. Uganda owes you a great deal.
