Papa Eng. George Akol was born on 28th April 1935 at Ngora Hospital to the Late Nebu & Juliet Ikopit. He was the 2nd born in a family of 8 children.

He started his education at Ngora Primary School and continued to Ngora High School for his secondary education. He later joined Nabumali High School for his A Levels and continued to Makerere University and later Brighton College in the United Kingdom where he completed his training in Electrical Engineering and became a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers.

Upon return from the United Kingdom, Papa was immediately offered a job as Assistant City Engineer in Kampala City Council where he rose through the ranks to become the City Engineer, a position he held until he was transferred to the Ministry of Local Government as Director for National Lighting in 1992. He retired in 1994.

While in Kampala, Papa was involved in Church ministry and was the Church organist and Choir Master at St. John’s Church Kamwokya. An avid lawn tennis player and member of Kampala Club, Papa played for the Uganda national team and is a past chairman of the Uganda Lawn Tennis Association.

Papa was a loving husband to Toto Janet Akurut Akol, whom he married in November 1968. Their marriage was Christened in 1993 at St. John’s Church Kampala. Together, they are parents to 6 children; Paul, Sarah, Winnie, Eva, Sam & Tony and grandparents to Manuella, Rachel, Tracy, Paula, Jesse, Joanna, Ethan, Becky, Jason, Nissi, Ezraela, Azaria, Jayden, Josiah, Nathaniel, Shammah and Shalom.

Papa was also a father who brought up and nurtured so many other Children who grew up under his loving care, both at the “Kamwokya Home” and Omatenga.

Papa was a man of integrity, very loving, kind, and wise. Above all, feared and loved the Lord.  Papa was a very good disciplinarian; and we owe our good upbringing to him.
